Introduction to Database Planning

Before you get into the technical details of what type of Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) you need, there are some basic questions to think about.

Planning a database is similar to planning a website; you still need to answer the "5 W's":

  • What data is being organized? What are the expected end results? What storage space is available?
  • Why is this data needed?
  • Who will be using and viewing the data?
  • Where will the database be stored and accessed?
  • How will it be used? How comfortable are you with accessing database tools?

Whether you are planning an enterprise-wide reservations database tracking system or you just want to organize and track your personal library, answering these questions will help you narrow down the database tools you need. It can also save a lot of time and money, since you won't need to buy unnecessary tools.
